Simon Greenish, former CEO of the Bletchley Park Trust, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Science yesterday by the University of Bedfordshire, in recognition of his significant contribution to charitable work for the Bletchley Park Trust.

Simon was Director of the Bletchley Park Trust from April 2006 until January 2012. When he arrived the Trust was in financial dire straits. He said “There was a horrible imbalance between income and expenditure, nearly every building was in ruins and we had a most concerned volunteer group who sensed a disaster unfolding.”

Today, Bletchley Park’s future is bright. The Trust recently announced it had raised £2.4m to unlock £5m in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. That money will be spent restoring the historic codebreaking Huts 6 and 3, the building which housed the enormous card index, Block C, and landscaping within the site, with the aim of recreating the wartime atmosphere.  Fundraising is now getting underway for the next phase of redevelopment, with a target of £15m.

Iain Standen, Simon’s successor as CEO of the Bletchley Park Trust, said, “Simon’s contribution to saving Bletchley Park for the nation was enormous. When he took over as CEO six years ago it was struggling to stay open on a month to month basis. In contrast, I took over a vibrant going concern and I had the exciting task of writing a ten year vision.”
